A while ago I was commissioned to design a memorial sculpture. A worthy work of art for the Moluccan community in Hilversum. I chose to make a monument with layers. Central is the bronze “Suitcase” as a metaphor. In addition, we (in collaboration with Jan Vreeker) carved a huge stone volume with fossils into 3 pieces as a symbol of 3 generations. The largest stone is a pedestal with the text: Beta Berlayar Jauh: “I sail far away”. The stones (along with a swarm of smaller blocks) form a “family” and a place to sit and remember. On March 21, 2023, the memorial was unveiled by Alderman Arno Scheepers and Mr Moz Latureru in memory of all Moluccan Marines who are buried in the Noorderbegraafplaats and Zuiderhof in Hilversum. Many thanks to Funeral Foundation Hilversum: Anita Loon.
