The work of Barbara Houwers consists of paintings, drawings and sculptures in between disciplines. Initially trained as a painter (HKU 1992), a consistent oeuvre unfolds in his own, recognizable style. She tells story’s in various materials and disciplines about universal subjects such as connection, identity and migration. Houwers permanently explores the boundaries within which she can depict her themes. She is fascinated by the traces that arise during the work process. Sometimes she works in a digital design program and creates conceptual works. Most of the work is done by hand. She likes to work in repeated structures that seem abstract at first glance. Furthermore, the viewer constantly discovers the story. In recent work – by zooming out – man seems to fade on behalf of new forms and space.

Her work is included in many national and international collections. www.barbarahouwers.com.
